Santo Grid Expansion – Vanuatu
The Santo Grid Expansion involved over 550 poles across 45kms on the East Coast Highway (or “Goodwill Highway”) on the island of Santo Espiritu in Vanuatu. This project is another clear demonstration of the MAP commitment of best for project and Relationship Contracting with the work being directly negotiated with the Vanuatu Project Management Unit.
The project was jointly funded by the Asian Development bank and the Vanuatu government as part of the Vanuatu Energy Access Projects initiative, which aims to increase access to renewable energy on Santo from an existing Hydropower plant.
The project involved the installation of over 550 power poles across approximately 45km along one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. The skills and training provided by ILS on the Malekula project meant that our team of around 25 Ni-Vanuatu woka’s (Workers) and our supervising Expat team largely completed the full scope of work directly with high level QA and oversight remotely from New Zealand. Reticulated power is connected to 7 local villages through 50KVa (Pole mounted) and 100KVa (Ground mounted). The skill levels attained by the Ni Van “Linesmen” were to a very high standard and they can be extremely proud of the work that they have delivered.
This project rounded out the MAP experiences on Vanuatu (so far) and it has included many experiences our teams will remember for a long time (walking through Auckland Airport as the only 3 people in the airport, various covid isolations) however the warm smiles and enduring friendships will last a lifetime
